Red Door

Abandoned Series. Elkmont, Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Red Door is a photograph of the interior of an abandoned summer home in the Elkmont area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, TN.

The colors in the image are those that I actually encountered in May, 2012; they have not been changed in post-processing.

I would like to know the family history and personalities responsible for the green walls, red doors, and applied "bird art" visible in the upper center of the image.

At the time of the photograph, there was already a hole in the roof near the door, exposing the interior to sun and weather. When I went back to the house in spring 2016, the door had faded dramatically, most of the floor had caved in, and the bird art had peeled off the wall.

The whole building will collapse soon, and the Red Door will be no more.
